Chiropractic began in 1895 in Davenport, Iowa as a form of hands on healing. The philosophy of chiropractic is that the body is a self-healing, self-regulating organism. Interference in self-regulation is what causes the body to break down and become susceptible to illness, disease and pain. Interference comes in three forms:
- Trauma which can be major trauma such as falls and accidents or micro-trauma from bad posture or poor work ergonomics.
- Toxins such as environmental pollutions in our air and water, chemicals in our beauty and cleaning products or pesticides in our food.
- Stress which we all experience every day.
Trauma, toxins and stress lead to misalignments in the vertebral column or spine. These misalignments called subluxations impinge upon the very delicate nerves that exit the spinal column from the base of your skull down to your low back. Pressure on the spinal nerves not only causes pain, muscle spasm, numbness and loss of motion but also causes a decrease in function to any organ or tissue that is supplied by those nerves.
When a person’s organs are functioning at a higher lever they often experience normal blood pressure and cholesterol levels, a decrease in symptoms of asthmas and allergies, less headaches, fewer colds and flues, better digestion and elimination of waste as well as healthy hormonal function.
Chiropractors are the only health care providers trained and licensed to correct vertebral subluxations.
The education process for Doctors of Chiropractic begins with a 4-year bachelor’s degree in health sciences followed by 5 years of Chiropractic College where courses studied mirror medical school such as anatomy and physiology, pathology, microbiology, biochemistry and toxicology. Chiropractic students also study radiology, nutrition and chiropractic adjusting techniques to locate and correct subluxations.
In addition many Doctors of Chiropractic do additional course work in diagnosis and treatment of extremity conditions, issues of pregnancy, pediatric illnesses, and nutritional deficiencies and sports injuries.
At the Khoury Centre we take a whole body approach to health. We care for patients from infancy to the senior years for a myriad of health concerns utilizing chiropractic adjustments, nutrition and exercise. This allows each of our patients to experience and express the health that they deserve.
